Michael Aarenau was called to the bar in 2022 after receiving his law degrees in Common and civil law from McGill University in 2021. Before that, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs and Policy Management from Carleton University in 2017. With over five years at S. Zalman Haouzi Avocat, Michael has worked alongside Zalman on hundreds of cases and has experience representing clients charged with everything from impaired driving to sexual assault. Michael strongly believes in the importance of defending Charter rights and holding the state accountable. He takes a principled approach to defending his clients and fighting for the pursuit of justice.

Michael recognizes the immense faith people place in their lawyers and feels an unbridled sense of responsibility towards his clients and the administration of justice. He is emotionally invested in the outcome of each case. He is genuinely committed to his clients’ welfare, both inside and outside of the courtroom. He approaches criminal law from the perspective that people are more than their worst day and that it is in everyone’s best interest to avoid a criminal record, stay out of jail, and remain connected to their family and community.

With a background as a speechwriter on Parliament Hill, Michael has a strong command of the written word, and firmly understands the power of persuasive advocacy. He can often be found in his office at late hours of the night, drafting robust charter motions to get evidence excluded f or penning lengthy legal representations to secure an acquittal.

Michael is involved in several community organizations. He is a supervising lawyer for Innocence McGill, where he tirelessly works to bring justice to the wrongfully convicted and oversees the work of motivated McGill Law students. He is also involved with the Lord Reading Law Society and is a member of his synagogue’s Young Professionals Committee. Despite his busy schedule, Michael still finds time for weekly phone calls with his mother.
